KARIBA INVITATION TIGER FISH TOURNAMENT HISTORY
50 YEARS OF TOURNAMENT!
From 1962, with just 33 Teams entering mainly from Zimbabwe and South Africa, the tournament has grown and in 1991 there were 333 teams - some 300 more teams than the first tournament. At last year's tournament 143 teams participated from more than 6 countries.
The 2000 Tournament recorded the biggest catch in the tournaments 49 years of 9 945,18kgs - with a total catch of 4,788 fish.
The biggest fish to come from the Tournament was caught in 2009 by Martinhus Van Rensburg weighing in at 12,735kg. Just prior to this on the same day Sandra Pienaar caught a 10,550Kgs
Ladies have also become a force to be reckoned with, Mandy Ferreira landing a magnificent 10,210 kg in the 2002 tournament.
The current record Tiger Fish was caught by Jenni Daynes weighing in at 16,1Kg (35lb 7oz) which was caught outside of the tournament on 9 December 2001.
KITFT was recognized by IGFA as one of the greatest Game Fish tournaments in the World and was made a qualifying round of the IGFA Inshore World Game Fish Championships.
KITFT Web Site is provided by Sweetmellon Publishers and is sponsored and administered by David Whitehead, it is updated on a regular basis to keep everyone informed.
This year sees the staging of the 50th Kariba Invitation Tiger fish Tournament that runs from the 26th to the 28th October.
There has already been significant interest shown and entries are expected to be between 250 and 300 teams from a far afield as Australia, New Zealand, Middle East and Canada. The traditional sponsors are all on board for what promises to be an unforgettable experience for both old and new competitors when some 400 odd boats take off at the 6am start on the first day.
The Tournament is held at the NAUZ (National Anglers Union of Zimbabwe) site at Charara on the shores of Lake Kariba and preparations there are already underway, including the building of a new and enlarged Weigh Bay area.
The ban on pre-baiting and practicing from 06:00hrs Monday 19th September through to 06:00hrs Saturday 22nd October 2011 is once again in place and has proved to provide a level playing field for all competitors. The ban is comprehensively enforced by volunteer marshals and any team, third party or individual caught infringing this rule could face a ban of up to 10 years.
Accommodation bookings during the Tournament are already filling up fast and any prospective entrants are advised to book early to avoid disappointment. There are still plenty of camping facilities, with excellent ablutions available at the Charara site and bookings can be made through. Local hotels also still have rooms available, the only problem here being the distance from the Charara venue is approx 20km.
The usual entertainment in the evenings from Monday through to Friday will be provided. A cover charge will be made on all non-anglers for entry to Friday evenings Prize Giving and party. There will of course be full bar and catering facilities available.
Entry to the Tournament will cost $300.00/team, a slight increase on last year which has been made to ensure that all competitors receive quality memorabilia in their goodie bags issued to all teams.
Entry forms will be available from leading Angling outlets from mid August and downloaded from our website.
